About Us :

Downeast Wilderness Experience was formed in 2010.  Its main purpose was to keep the Maine Forestry Campgrounds at Cranberry, Sabao and Deer Lakes from being shut down forever.

These State campgrounds had been State funded and maintained for years but were on private land.  With new laws and liability issues and more and more complaints, landowners and the State had made the decision to gate off the properties and not allow them to be publicly accessible any longer.

When hearing of the news, we made the decision to meet with the landowners to ask if there was anything we could do to keep these beautiful properties open.  An agreement was reached and since then we have been able to keep these open to the public.

As with any business there are costs for us to operate.  The change of not being free any longer came along,  we must pay a yearly lease, maintenance, insurances etc.

For the most part people have understood and are extremely thankful that the campgrounds still remain open after all these years.  Many people are third and fourth generation campers.

We are local to the area and know a lot of our customers from year to year.  We are pleased to share this portion of our beautiful County and State with you.
